At our staff meeting this morning one of the members of our staff shared some things from their life – hard things that have caused pain and have brought tears. Later I shared with them some of the choices that I have made in the past, the lessons that I have learned, and the grace that I have received. One thing that I shared in our conversation was that I love that I work with a bunch of messed up people who aren’t afraid to admit that they are not perfect. As I looked around the room I was thinking of some of the stories that I know of our staff members.
Guess what? The staff of CVC is not perfect. The pastors that preach, the people that lead worship music, the people that provide counseling, the finance team, the children’s ministry team, and the administration – we’re all messy. We’ve all been enslaved to different things – sins that come in all shapes and sizes and hurt people in myriad ways. We battle pride, have fights with our spouses, fail our kids, get angry when we shouldn’t, and we even lie. We have pasts that include drugs, alcohol, divorce, lust, being arrested, and much more. We’ve followed other religions, loved lots of of bad things, and made tons of foolish choices….and we still mess up all of the time.
But here is the thing. The reason that we do what we do is because we believe in a God who loved us when we were sinners. Ephesians 2 reminds us that God choose to love us while we were carrying out the passions of our flesh. He didn’t choose to love us after we fixed ourselves. If that were the case, we’d all be in big trouble.
We work at CVC and do what we do because we believe in a God who loves to fix broken people.
We work at CVC and do what we do because we have first -hand experience in knowing that there is no one who is too far gone, no one to filthy, no one who has done too much bad that God cannot change their heart and forgive their sins.
We work at CVC and do what we do because Jesus pours his mercy out on us every day and we want people to know about that mercy.
We work at CVC and do what we do because there is a God in heaven who loved us enough to send his son to die in our place in order to restore our relationship with Him – and that is the best news in the entire world.
We work at CVC and do what we do because we have been broken and are broken (by sin), but that through Jesus broken people can be renewed and restored.
Christmas time around a church is madness. I looked up at my clock today and could not believe that it was 5:00 already.
But let me tell you what. We’re going full blast because Christmas is right around the corner and we know that people will walk in these doors in a few weeks that might not ever walk into a church again.
So we will continue to do what we do here, broken as we are, because Christmas time is about the Light of the World – Jesus.
I once heard it said that light is of no use unless there is darkness for it to overcome.
It’s true – myself and my fellow staff members have darkness in our pasts, in our present,[Tweet “light is of no use unless there is darkness for it to overcome. “] and I’m sure there will be dark days in our futures
But the Light has illuminated our hearts and we want everyone to know about it.
In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. (John 1:4-5 ESV)
